Psalm 98

O sing to the Lord a new song,
    for he has done marvelous things.
His right hand and his holy arm
    have gotten him victory.
The Lord has made known his victory;
    he has revealed his vindication in the sight of the nations.
He has remembered his steadfast love and faithfulness
    to the house of Israel.
All the ends of the earth have seen
    the victory of our God.

Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth;
    break forth into joyous song and sing praises.
Sing praises to the Lord with the lyre,
    with the lyre and the sound of melody.
With trumpets and the sound of the horn
    make a joyful noise before the King, the Lord.

Let the sea roar, and all that fills it;
    the world and those who live in it.
Let the floods clap their hands;
    let the hills sing together for joy
at the presence of the Lord, for he is coming
    to judge the earth.
He will judge the world with righteousness,
    and the peoples with equity.

Sing to the Lord a new song because of the marvelous things God has done. God has vindicated the people. The psalmist calls the whole earth to make a joyful noise in celebration of God’s steadfast love and faithfulness.

I have been married to a songwriter for more than twenty-five years. One quality I honor in him more than any other is his faithfulness in creating. He never doubts a new song will come. Each morning, with a cup of coffee and the sun rising in pale lavender bands, he sits at his baby grand and begins creating melodies. Even as I write this piece, I can hear waves of music maybe never heard by another soul in this world as he composes in a different room.

The psalmist understands that God is coming to set matters right. God’s ongoing work in creation, in you and me, is joyful. It opens up new possibilities for others, for communities, and for ourselves. We embrace these new beginnings, welcoming them as new revelations of God’s steadfast love.

Every beginning in our lives has an ending. Each ending marks a new beginning. Always we begin anew with confidence that we will not be alone. There are countless new melodies and endless new mornings. We live in faith that God meets us in all of our futures. Wherever life leads us, God is with us

We sing a new song in praise of what has happened, what is happening, and in anticipation of what is yet to come. We embrace new songs for the transformations we witness in individuals and communities. We rejoice in each new day that God has made and the promise of renewal and rebirth that comes with those days.

God, our Creator and Sustainer, continue to be with us. We live in gratitude for and in reliance on your presence. Help us know that you are the Rock, the core of permanence when all else falls away. Amen.
